Alex Tavoularis – Illustrations
June 12 2014 – July 27 2014
Artists Reception Thurs June 12th 7-10pm at The District Gallery
It would be a vast understatement to say Alex Tavoularis’s film credits are impressive: As a storyboard artist, production illustrator, production designer or art director, a few of his more than 40 credits include Apocalypse Now, Star Wars, The Godfather: Part III, Gardens of Stone, Peggy Sue Got Married and One from the Heart. His production designs for Apocalypse Now and other films have been displayed at the Houard Gallery in Paris and the Cinamatheque Francaise has purchase a considerable number of them for their archives.
His pen and ink illustrations of the people and places he has encountered in real and imaginary realms reveal a rich imagination, sensuality and occasionally caustic wit that when freed from the contrasts of his film work, prove Alex to be an intriguing, delightful observer. His comic and cosmic bents are given free rein in the illustrations created over several decades included in his show at the District Gallery. His work is both technically accomplished and psychologically insightful, echoing at times Honore Daumier or suggesting the classic sci-fi illustrations of Virgil Finlay who’s work defined the classic visual style of Amazing Stories.
